Improve Academic Outcomes Through Improved Listening Environments
Room A1 Lightspeed Technologies Hearing is the primary channel by which students learn in the classroom. It is no secret that listening is critical to learning, but when you consider students spend 75% of their day in listening activities and students don’t hear like adults until the age of 15, it becomes vital to ensure all students are able to listen. The primary tool that teachers use all day, every day in the classroom is their voice. Research substantiates listening's direct correlation with learning. Yet these concepts are often ignored when considering education technology for the classroom where visual and interactive technologies are the focus. This session will focus on the physics of sound in the classroom, the importance of delivering a clear signal of sound to each and every student in an equitable manner, and how to best encourage student voice through that process. We will spend some time discussing how the pandemic created both a crisis and an awareness for clear instructional speech intelligibility due to mask wearing and hybrid learning. We will conclude by talking through the future of the classroom in light of teacher shortages and how audio technology will be able to help school districts provide options to the traditional classroom.
