The deadline for school districts to take action against a major data security threat is fast approaching. After January 14, 2020, Windows 7 and 2008 Server is reaching “End of Life” (EOL) and will no longer be supported by Microsoft.
The Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC) has a process in place for districts to purchase extended security updates through their CSR/liaison/project manager.
Although the software was launched in 2009, it is still widely used. The WNYRIC advises districts to avoid the risk of being unsupported.
“Any district using these systems needs to upgrade or get the devices off the network,” Scott Przywara, WNYRIC Chief Data Protection, Security and Compliance Officer, said. “After January 14, 2020 Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates for Windows 7/2008 Server, leaving districts vulnerable to hackers.”
Districts can choose to utilize the time they have with Erie 1 BOCES technology specialists to update devices before the deadline.
Be prepared for the next Microsoft program, Office 2010 to reach end of life October 2020. There will be no extended security update for Office 2010.
