Advanced Placement Summer Institute: Get Your AP Course Off the Ground this Summer
For over a decade, the Advanced Placement Summer Institute at Erie I BOCES has given teachers the resources and guidance to advance AP offerings in their schools.
“While the AP Summer institute is not required to teach an AP course, every AP syllabus must be approved by the College Board. The APSI provides helpful information and resources that teachers typically find very helpful,” according to Mary Jo Casilio, the APSI director and curriculum coordinator for Erie 1 BOCES.
“It is a great opportunity to dig deeper into the content and pedagogy of a course,” Casilio added. “Teachers have a chance to network with others implementing similar content.”
The certified College Board consultants come from around the country and sometimes so do the participants. “We are often asked is this only for Western New York teachers. No, this is for any teacher who teaches or wants to teach an AP course,” Casilio said.
This year’s offerings are:
- Calculus (Bill Semus)
- English Language (Don Stoll)
- English Literature (Michael O'Brien)
- World History (Frank Passaro)
- U.S. History (Tim Greene)
- Art & Design (Susan Altman)
The four-day, 30-hour sessions will be held July 6-9 at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus, 355 Harlem Road, West Seneca. The workshops will focus on syllabus development, curriculum materials, teaching strategies, and the AP examination.
NOTE: Participants MUST register in BOTH My Learning Plan AND through the College Board CVent Registration link. If teachers begin with the CVent link (above), they will automatically be led to the appropriate My Learning Plan link.
