Data Security and Privacy Series No. 4: Cyber Security Workshops
As cybersecurity threats are becoming more prevalent, the Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC) is providing resources to districts to stay informed. WNYRIC Chief Data Protection, Security and Compliance Officer Scott Przywara and Data Integration and Data Support Services Manager David Scalzo provided districts with a workshop that reviewed the requirements of Ed Law 2-d and the proposed regulations part 121.
They supplied information and checklists in a toolkit that included, what to look for in a data protection officer, what must be in third party contracts that share students’ personally identifiable information (PII) and teacher and principal annual professional performance review (APPR) data, and steps for a complaint procedure.
“Districts need to assign the role of data protection officer because they will be the point person to implement these new policies and procedures,” Przywara said. “In addition, districts need to work on identifying software applications that share student PII and teacher and principal APPR data.”
The Board of Regents’ comment period on Education Law 2-d closed December 9, 2019. The Board of Regents will meet in January to potentially adopt the regulation.
To meet the needs of districts, WNYRIC has the Enhanced Cyber Security Service (650.845.81) and Data Privacy and Security Service (650.699).
