Hidden Gem: Challenger Learning Center
Just off the beaten path and an atmosphere away, the Challenger Learning Center offers instructional and fun science activities that are available to teachers. Luckily, no spaceship is required to visit the center in Lockport.
“We are an international brand supported by NASA, but many haven’t heard of the Challenger Learning Center or what we can offer educators,” Executive Director Kathy Michaels said.
The CLC has worked with WNYRIC Coordinator Renee Sossong-Brady to make sure each of their diverse programs align with the New York State Science Learning Standards.
“If teachers are looking for that something to spice up their science curriculum and increase student engagement, this could be what they are looking for. And there are aid options available!” Sossong-Brady said.
The Simulated Space Mission is reimbursable through the Arts and Cultural Education COSER at Erie 1 BOCES and Orleans Niagara BOCES. Students start out the two-hour activity allows students to take a space shuttle to the International Space Station in order to build a probe to intercept the comet Halle. This activity is appropriate for students in grades 5 and up.
The Simulated Space Mission can also be combined with a planetarium program, appropriate for kindergarten and up. Or the mobile planetarium can come to your school.
State issued COVID-19 safety measures are in effect.
