Data Privacy & Security Series No. 5: New Data Protection Officer Service to be Offered in 2020-21
As the needs of component districts change, so too do the services offered by the Western New York Information Center (WNYRIC) and Erie 1 BOCES change to meet the needs of districts in 2020.
One new service to be offered in the 2020-21 school year is support for Data Protection Officers (DPOs). The service provides guidance, support, training and collaboration opportunities for district Data Protection Officers (DPOs).
“We are trying to provide services that will help districts navigate the unfunded mandates of Education Law Section 2-D and Part 121 of the regulations,” Scott Przywara, WNYRIC Chief Data Protection, Security and Compliance Officer, said. “The goals of the Data Protection Officer service are to guide the DPOs through the requirements of the laws and regulations to ensure their district is in compliance.”
A DPO is responsible for a school district’s policies and procedures to manage the protection, security of and access to, information deemed confidential, sensitive or regulatory protected by federal and state laws.
DPO Service Base service (650.947.30) includes quarterly meetings on data protection topics and compliance, remote incident response guidance and email group for collaboration.
New DPO Training (650.947.31) includes both face-to-face and online training opportunities for new DPOs. Guest speaker sessions are a part of the Special Events subservice (650.947.32). Special Projects (650.947.33) include in-district or online custom sessions for group training, board of education presentations, etc.
