You’re Invited to the WNY Regional Maker Faire
You’re invited to the WNY Regional Maker Faire. The inaugural event will be held April 30 from 10am-4pm at Frontier High School in Hamburg, NY. It is free to attend. For those who may be unfamiliar with Maker Faire, think a day-long show-and-tell where folks who are passionate about science, craft and technology come together to share their talents and teach others their skills. It’s a celebration of innovation, creativity and resourcefulness!
Antonio Scordo III, an Instructional Technology Resource Coordinator for Erie 1 BOCES/WNYRIC and event organizer got involved in 2014 when he visited his first Maker Faire. A maker himself, Antonio brought his family to the event and him and his daughter have been hooked ever since. Antonio is a self-proclaimed “tinker-er” while his daughter Rose’s talents range from robotics to baking. While the world watched Tiger King during the pandemic Rose, a high school sophomore and perpetual maker, taught herself how to crochet, knit and make cannoli- among other skills.
Antonio brings his love for ‘making’ into his work at Erie 1 BOCES/WNYRIC every day. He is a member of the Pilots and Innovative Projects Team that works to integrate new technology into classrooms throughout the region. He is helping school libraries develop maker spaces and works alongside teachers to show them new technology.
When asked about the importance of events like Maker’s Faire, Antonio says “it is important for kids to know they can be creators, not just consumers. These events expose students to new technology, new ways of thinking and brings them into a community that is founded on sharing knowledge.”
The Maker Faire isn’t just for kids! Everyone can learn something from the more than 40 makers ranging in age and expertise at the event. There will be plenty of hands-on activities for the whole family that will turn learning into a day full of fun.
Are you a maker? Become a part of the Maker Faire Rochester on November 20.
